Renewing a passport

Uruguayan passports issued previously to the digital ones, or issued by a Consulate of Uruguay, have a validity of five (5) years from the date of issuance, and can be renewed only once for five (5) more years, expiring definitely after 10 years. If that is the case of your passport, you can file for a renewing of such booklet, either in person orby mail, for which the requirements are the following:

  • Current passport
  • Cedula de Identidad (I.D.). This is the main document and if the person does not have it or it has been lost or stolen, please contact the Consulate General to know the details of what has to be done.
  • Local police record (clearance letter).  This document is mandatory -with no exceptions- to any citizen over the age of 18, and is issued by the Police Department, the The County Sheriff or the Court of Justice.
  • One recent picture, in color on white background, passport size.  If the person wears glasses, they will have to be removed for the picture.
  • the application form, which can be downloaded below

If the bearer of the passport is under the age of 18, both parents or legal guardians will have to sign an authorization, for which they will have to present their respective ID, together with a birth certificate of the child or the family book where the child is registered.

Click here  to learn the details of the aforementioned authorization.

If the bearer of the passport is a legal citizen, apart from the documentation mentioned before, he/she will have to present the "Carta de Ciudadania" (citizenship document), the "Credencial Civica" (Voting ID) and proof that no other citizenship has been acquired (green card or visa).

The cost of  the renewal is U$S 56,00, and can be paid in cash, a money order or a Cashier's Check issued to "Consulado del Uruguay".

Starting June 28th 2012 the consular fee for this paperwork is US$ 28.

It is recommended that if the applicant will request the renewal in person, once he/she has all the documentation and money required, to coordinate an appointment, so the renewal can be done and delivered when applying for it.
